Anticonvulsant intoxication precipitated by azapropazone.

چکیده
Introduction Anticonvulsant drugs have a low therapeutic ratio so that dosage requirements are critical. Their effects are therefore susceptible to the influences of concurrent medication. In common with the anticonvulsants, the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs tend to be highly protein bound and metabolized in the liver. Thus, potential for interaction between these groups of drugs exists. A case is reported in which such a hitherto unrecognized interaction led to serious toxicity.

Comparative trial of azapropazone and indomethacin plus allopurinol in acute gout and hyperuricaemia.
This study compared the effects of azapropazone and indomethacin plus allopurinol in the management of acute gout and hyperuricaemia. A group of 93 patients predominantly based in general practice were randomly allocated to the two treatment regimens (azapropazone (days 1-225) or indomethacin (1-28) followed by allopurinol (29-225)) on a double-blind double dummy basis. Azapropazone produced a ...
متن کاملAnticonvulsant peripheral neuropathy: a clinical and electrophysiological study of patients on single drug treatment with phenytoin, carbamazepine or barbiturates.
Previous studies of phenytoin neuropathy in selected groups of chronic epileptic patients on polytherapy have indicated a widely varying incidence of clinical or electrophysiological abnormalities. In 51 previously untreated epileptic patients followed prospectively on phenytoin or carbamazepine monotherapy, assisted by blood level monitoring, for 1-5 years we found no clinical evidence of neur...
متن کاملEffect of five common anticonvulsant drugs on naloxone-precipitated morphine withdrawal in mice
This study was designed to assess the effect of five common anticonvulsant drugs on naloxone-precipitated withdrawal syndrome in morphine-dependent mice. Male mice (25-35 g) were made dependent by increasing doses of morphine (30-90 mg/kg). At least three doses of phenytoin, carbamazepine, sodium valproate, lamotrigine and topiramate were injected i.p. to morphine-dependent mice 45 min prior to...
متن کاملSubacute encephalopathy with seizures in alcoholism
Generalised seizures are a common manifestation of acute alcohol intoxication. Alcohol is known to precipitate generalised seizures in patients with focal brain pathology. A rare case of secondarily generalised seizures precipitated by alcohol in a patient without an underlying focal brain lesion is reported. Electroencephalopgraphy (EEG) showed periodic lateralised epileptiform discharges (PLE...
متن کاملPsychoses Associated with Anticonvulsant Toxicity
Acute intoxication with many of the antiepileptic drugs may present with mental symptoms (encephalopathy, confusion, psychosis), sometimes in the absence of other clinical signs such as nystagmus, dysarthria or ataxia etc. (Logan and Freeman 1969 ; McDonal and Bolman 1975 ; Ahmad et al. 1975 ; Reynolds 1982). Atypical anticonvulsant toxicity in mentally retarded children have been reported but ...
